By Eli Whitney's time, Michael Faraday in England and Joseph Henry in America, two of the world's greatest self-trained explorers of science, had begun to understand the interplay of magnetism and electricity. One fruit of their experiments: the electric motor. Recreate from scratch Faraday and Henry's failures and triumphs. Then construct a brilliantly simple electric motor.

*Because...Start from scratch. Small and large motors are all descendants of Faraday and Henry's experiments. Modern motors are now so small and enclosed that their parts and logic are nearly invisible. We make motors not for their power, but for their ideas. And they are still fun to play with.

Instructor: Wm Brown, Kyra Post and other Hopkins students.

The Hopkins School has sponsored scholarships for this class.
Hopkins values intrepid explorers.
